At Smals, sustainability is not a trend, but an integral part of our work. With Circuzand, we take an important step in the transition to circular construction materials. The product was developed in response to a concrete market demand and our conviction that valuable materials should not be wasted.
Crushed concrete rubble sand was long considered a difficult by-product, intended for low-value applications. We saw an opportunity. By combining concrete crusher sand with carefully selected primary sand, we developed a stable mixture that meets the strict requirements of concrete plants.
With advanced, automated analysis equipment that checks and adjusts the mixture every 30 seconds, we ensure consistent quality. In this way, we transform a waste stream into a reliable, high-quality, and circular product.
Closing the loop with Circuzand
Circuzand makes it possible to close material loops and save primary resources. The first pilots have been successfully completed. Once the required BRL certification has been obtained, we can scale up the mixing process at our own sand extraction sites. For concrete plants, which often lack the space to do this themselves, this provides a practical and sustainable solution.
Collaboration across the chain is essential
To deploy Circuzand optimally, collaboration across the entire chain is necessary - from demolition companies to concrete producers. Proper separation at the source is crucial. Concrete must be delivered clean; materials such as tiles, wood, plaster, and metals belong in other circular chains. Collaboration and awareness are therefore key elements of our approach.
A new standard in construction materials
The demand for sand and gravel remains high: around 30 million tonnes annually. Only a fraction of this comes from demolition material. Circuzand can meet part of that demand and enable high-quality applications, but primary resources remain necessary.
As a sector, we must exploit the potential of circular concrete rubble sand and prevent valuable materials from being used in low-value applications. With Circuzand, we demonstrate that it is possible: circular, high-quality, and ready for large-scale deployment.
