According to Hein Gartsen, Commercial Manager at Smals Bouwgrondstoffen B.V., Circuzand was born from a clear market demand and an intrinsic motivation to use materials more efficiently. “We noticed that more and more concrete waste is generated during demolition projects. Instead of using these residual streams in a low-value way, we wanted to develop a product that could serve again as a fully-fledged construction raw material.”
The first seed was planted around six years ago, when questions arose within Smals about how the company could implement circularity. Gartsen explains: “We were convinced that we could take it a step further ourselves. Concrete has a strong and durable character – why wouldn’t we reprocess that material into a high-quality raw material? That is how the idea for Circuzand came about.”
Circuzand thus forms the link between circular ambitions and the practical needs of the construction sector. The product provides a sustainable, high-quality application for crushed concrete sand, sourced from carefully selected and controlled residual streams. Smals closes the loop: from demolition waste to a usable construction raw material, without compromising on quality.
With Circuzand, Smals sets a new standard in circular sand production and demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can reinforce each other within the construction chain.
