Project visit to Dümmer–Randkanal

01 June 2025
Koninklijke Smals
Smals is currently working on the Dümmer–Randkanal, a channel of more than 9 km, which is being restored to its proper depth using the cutter suction dredger Phoenix.
This maintenance is crucial to ensure water flow during high water levels and to prevent large-scale flooding in the area, such as the events experienced last year.

The work takes place in a beautiful marshy nature area that is important for meadow birds. During the project, staff even came across a nest of lapwing eggs on their way to the dredger.

The project is scheduled to be completed in the coming weeks, after which the team will move on to the next assignment.
