Innovative reuse of silt with the unique, sustainable Baleen Rapid Dewatering System®

Smart dredging
The Netherlands has many towns and villages with urban waters still contaminated with silt. Before we carry out dredging operations, we look for environmentally friendly and economically interesting solutions by maximising the use of silt as a valuable resource.
In the town of Borculo, several ponds and canals were mechanically dredged using floating bulldozers. Special slurry trailers transported the dredged material to a temporary dewatering location next to the town centre. After dewatering, the material was separated into two streams: reusable sand (raw construction material) and (fertile) soil.

Next, the ‘De Berkelzomp’ canal was cleaned using a unique hydraulic method. The dredged material was stored in geotextile containers. These containers were used to repair and reinforce the deteriorated water embankment.

Significant cost savings were achieved, while the existing banks and embankments were developed and strengthened
