At the Baggersee am Möhlin in Breisach am Rhein, a large amount of fine sediment had accumulated over time.
This silt layer obstructed the extraction of valuable construction materials. Smals was commissioned to desilt the lake, giving the client Schotterwerk renewed access to extractable sand and gravel.
The fine sediment was carefully removed and pumped through a 2,200-metre-long steel pipeline with a diameter of 600 mm to a former, abandoned dredging pit. Using an underwater diffuser, the slurry was evenly distributed under water without turbidity of the surrounding water. This approach enabled controlled and environmentally responsible processing of the sediment.
These activities made valuable minerals extractable again and allowed the sand and gravel extraction process to resume sustainably.
