The Burchtse Weel in Zwijndrecht is a key link in the natural drainage towards the Schelde.
Sediment accumulation had severely restricted the creek’s flow, putting water discharge and management under pressure. Smals was commissioned to dredge the creek and restore drainage.
Using a 10-inch cutter dredger, the creek was carefully desilted, allowing water from the hinterland to flow freely to the Scheldt again. During the operations, a sluice valve was also dewatered, enabling the Belgian client to carry out maintenance and further optimise water management. The project was executed with care for the surroundings and existing water structures.
The result is improved natural drainage and a more robust water system for Zwijndrecht.
