The Randkanal of Dümmersee plays an essential role in the drainage of the surrounding nature and tourism area.
Due to prolonged sediment and fine sand deposits, the canal had become significantly shallowed, putting its drainage capacity under pressure. On behalf of NLWKN, Smals carefully dredged the entire Randkanal over a length of almost 9 kilometres.
Using a 10-inch cutter dredger, supported by approximately 9,000 metres of pipeline and two booster stations, the sediment was efficiently removed. The dredged material was transported via pipeline to specially designated nature depots of the client. There, the material could be processed in a controlled manner, in line with the ecological requirements of the area.
By re-profiling the Randkanal, the drainage capacity has been significantly improved, ensuring the Dümmersee area is better protected against flooding, while maintaining its natural and recreational functions.
