This is without doubt Smals’ most respected and sustainable project. Over 45 years, the Kraaijenbergse Plassen have evolved into one of the best-integrated area developments in the Netherlands. It includes one of the largest raw material extractions and sediment relocation operations connected to the inland water network. What was once pastureland with cows is now a multifunctional area for housing, recreation, and nature.
Together with the municipality, local residents, and other stakeholders, we developed a plan for a total area of 1,200 hectares. A beautiful residential environment was created, with homes accessible by both car and boat. We established beaches, moorings, landmarks, and nature reserves. The total length of new water and shoreline measures more than 25 kilometres.
By working carefully and developing the area in phases, the former extraction site gained a new identity. Natural banks, clear water, and varied habitats provide space for birds, fish, and countless other species. The lakes have thus become a valuable nature and recreation area, where tranquility, biodiversity, and water quality are central.
The development has also provided significant added value for the surrounding region. The Kraaijenbergse Plassen have become a popular destination for water sports, walking, and leisure, enhancing the attractiveness of the area. This project demonstrates that it is possible to manage environmental aspects responsibly while engaging local communities and authorities. It is a powerful example of how we take responsibility for a better future.
