Lyme Regis, known for its historic Cobb Harbour and picturesque coastline, experiences a high influx of sediment during the storm season.
As a result, the harbour quickly silts up, affecting both vessel access and safety in the area. As a Refuge Harbour, Lyme Regis must remain accessible throughout the year for emergency services and shipping.
Smals carries out annual maintenance dredging early in the season to prevent stagnation. Using a 10" cutter suction dredger and carefully positioned pipelines, we remove the excess sand and keep the harbour open for fishermen, leisure vessels and local businesses. The sand is deposited near the coast for beach replenishment, contributing to the protection of the popular coastline and the town’s tourist appeal.
