Stadspark Frederiksberg in Copenhagen is one of the city’s most famous and visited parks, serving as an important meeting place for both locals and tourists.
Years of silt accumulation had heavily silted up the park’s waterways, making recreational use, such as rowing, almost impossible. On behalf of HedeDanmark, Smals restored these waterways to depth over two dredging campaigns.
Using a 6-inch cutter suction dredger, the dredged silt was removed in a very quiet and environmentally friendly manner. The released silt was dewatered on-site in large Soiltains®, using biodegradable flocculants. Dewatering took place on one of the park’s existing lawns, without disrupting park use and with minimal impact on the surrounding area.
This approach restored the waterways, returned the park’s recreational function, and preserved the character of the urban park throughout the works.
