Behind dams in mountainous regions, such as in Austria, large amounts of rubble and silt accumulate annually. This limits storage capacity, strains turbines and can affect the safety of structures. Smals specializes in removing this silt in a controlled manner using innovative dredging techniques. Our approach removes the material efficiently, without damaging the dam or environment, and whenever possible, we reuse it as a valuable resource. This contributes to the sustainable performance and longer lifespan of hydropower plants.

Smart dredging
Silt dewatering can be very effective, circular and cost-saving
Removing and processing problematic or contaminated silt requires expert and flexible solutions. Depending on the situation, silt can be stored locally, transported to a depot or processed into a usable material. Modern techniques make it possible to separate solid and liquid components effectively, resulting in a more efficient and sustainable process.

A commonly used method is a rapid dewatering system (Baleen RDS) where a harmless binding agent is added and the silt is collected in water-permeable bags. This significantly reduces volume and weight. This leads to lower transport and storage costs, while the remaining water stays clean. In many cases, the dewatered silt can also be reused, for example as construction or fill material.

This approach is applied to various projects, such as ponds, waterways, harbors, dams, riverbanks and natural areas. Every location requires a tailored approach, with attention to cost savings, sustainability and respect for flora and fauna.
