Creating value consciously for multiple generations

Royal Smals
Social value at Smals
At Smals, it is about more than sand, gravel, and water management. Our projects contribute to a strong society and a healthy living environment – today and in the future. With a long-term vision and an integrated approach, we work together with governments, interest groups, local communities, and other partners to deliver solutions that create lasting value for people, nature, and the economy.
Sustainability roadmap
To structurally embed this social responsibility, Smals works with a sustainability roadmap. This roadmap provides direction and coherence for our ambitions and forms the framework within which concrete actions and projects are defined and monitored each year.

The roadmap is built around five pillars, with clear objectives for 2030 and 2035. This ensures that social responsibility, innovation, and business continuity reinforce each other, keeping Smals future-proof.
Energy
Reducing energy use and becoming locally self-sufficient.
Climate
Working in hard-to-reach and sensitive areas with minimal impact, on projects that contribute to a better living environment.
Circularity
Reusing materials, deploying secondary streams as efficiently as possible, and maximising the use of reclaimed resources.
Innovation
Enhancing the mobility of our assets, clean on-site energy supply, energy-efficient techniques, optimising production, and developing new products and markets.
Social
Being an attractive and enduring partner for current and future employees and collaborators.
Royal Smals
Circular and responsible operations
Smals is committed to reusing resources, reducing CO₂ emissions, and minimising disruption to the surrounding environment. Our projects apply innovative techniques that make processes more efficient and reuse waste streams, such as Circuzand, Baleen Solar, and the Baleen Rapid Dewatering System. This creates circular construction materials while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.
Ecology as an integral part of every project
All activities are carefully aligned with the environment. Before dredging, sand extraction, or area development, we assess ecological values. This protects fish populations and breeding grounds, promotes habitat restoration, and ensures that economic activity goes hand in hand with biodiversity and landscape quality.
Collaboration with societal impact
Through close cooperation with municipalities, water authorities, nature organisations, and other stakeholders, we deliver projects that go beyond the technical assignment. The result is enhanced water safety, new recreation and nature areas, and improved spatial quality.
Designing with a long-term vision
Our projects are designed for the long term. We develop climate-resilient, multifunctional areas that provide lasting value – including sustainable water storage, natural banks, and areas that simultaneously deliver ecological value and construction materials.
