In the province of Friesland there are sufficient stocks to help meet Dutch demand for construction sand for decades to come. Sand with a unique composition can be found in the IJsselmeer at a distance from the shore that will ensure safety and avoid disruption. Millions of tonnes of cement could potentially be saved every year. Furthermore, this sand can be extracted and transported in a very environmentally friendly way. In spite of the protests it has encountered, Smals will keep trying to take full advantage of this opportunity for the country and the region. The permit application is currently being considered by the Council of State.
